This was one of the BEST parts of the trip!
Between the historical aspects of D-Day, the beautiful countryside, and the enormous beaches, it really was something to see.  I dragged Sarah around this region quite a bit in two days.  We went from Carantan, to Arromanches-les-Bains, to Ste. Mare Eglise, as well as to the beaches of Utah, Omaha and Gold.  We saw the famous hedgerows (impressive), ate the local delicacies (loved the cider!) and was impressed with how gorgeous the area was.  We really loved this part of France!

The Atlantic Wall

Seeing the remnants of the Atlantic Wall overlooking Pointe du Hoc was really awesome.  There were so many craters in the ground from the bombardment that it looked like a moonscape-hard to imagine what it was like in 1944.

Utah Beach
Here we made our way down to the beach at Utah Beach-where American soldiers came ashore...the tides were the same, low tide.  It is easy to imagine the murderous machine guns that would have wiped out the troops.

This LST was the landing craft that millions of Allied troops used to get ashore in June 1944.  This craft was outside the museum at Utah Beach.

U.S. Cemetery
This cemetery is the  same one in the movie Saving Private Ryan.  It overlooks Omaha Beach-where the majority of American soldiers were killed in June 1944.  This was one of the more somber parts of the day.
